Join your San Diego Highlanders to help the Natural History Museum at their San Dieguito Lagoon habitats to help clean and restore the nesting grounds of the local least tern bird family.  Volunteers will be pulling and cleaning weeds, and should be prepared to kneel, bend, and be comfortable outdoors for the duration of the service.

Date: Saturday, March 16, 2024 

7:45 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. 

 

Time: Please plan to arrive at 7:30 a.m. to check in and be included in the carpool to the service destination. The day of service begins at 8:00 a.m. Volunteers should be prepared to stand, kneel, lift, and bend on a regular basis for the duration of their service in the the lagoon. You will be pulling and clearing weeds in restricted-access areas of San Dieguito Lagoon as part of a San Diego Natural History Museum Bioservices contract to provide nesting grounds for the endangered least tern. Upon arrival, all volunteers are required to complete a liability waiver.

Parking: Volunteers will park at Gelson’s Del Mar prior to carpooling to the San Dieguito Lagoon.

Meeting location: We will have a UCR Alumni & Family point person at the Meet Up Point (indicated on the map with the red pin) before carpooling to the San Dieguito Lagoon from 7:45 a.m. to 8 a.m.  

 

What to bring: Volunteers must wear sturdy work boots or shoes they are not afraid of getting dirty. Other things to bring are gloves, hat, sunscreen, jacket, snacks, and water. 

 

What NOT to bring: No pets or wagons are allowed. 
 

Clothes Safety: The NAT requires comfortable and sturdy shoes that you don't mind getting dirty. Please avoid wearing sandals, flip flops, open-toed shoes or high heels.  Please avoid wearing shorts and tank tops.

Safety Notes: You will be working in an ESA - Environmentally Sensitive Area - where there's protection for the least turn bird species. Therefore, please make sure to review the safety notes below.

  • Notify the site supervisor immediately if you need first aid administered.
  • If you, or someone around you, exhibits heat illness signs, please find a safe place to sit and apply cool/cold items to temples and back of neck. Small sips of water / electrolytes until you/they feel better.
  • Do not dump anything into the water ways. 
  • Clean up any spills caused while volunteering. In the event of a spill, do what you can to clean it up, and report it to the site supervisor.
  • Stay on provided pathways - do not take shortcuts.
  • If you find any cultural resources (like arrowheads) or archaeological resources - do not remove, or move anything. Alert your site supervisor.
